My first sip of coffee dribbled out of my mouth and all over my shirt. Not giving a shit, I sopped up the mess from my chest with one of Poetry’s scarves. She watched me but didn’t seem to care. I tried again and this time managed to get it all in my mouth at once, letting the burn travel down my esophagus to help wake me up.

Travis and Evan were drinking their coffee across from me with all the finesse of crack addicts who haven’t had a fix in a few days.

My bones ached, my muscles pleaded for mercy, and my heart, well, I was surprised she hadn’t just shriveled up and died already.

My cup clattered against the plate that was holding half a stale cinnamon roll on the side. Calories and sugar and caffeine were everything when you were teetering on the edge of disaster. I took a bite of the cardboard thing and chewed on it as best I could before swallowing the lump, hoping to the gods that it would give me some ounce of energy. I could use every ounce in that moment. Looking down at the cinnamon-swirled dried up thing, I thought about Dawn. She was wherever Owen was, I suspected, and it kind of felt wrong to be eating her pastries while exhausted from looking for both her and Owen. Still, beggars couldn’t be choosers.

I wished I had energy like Wulf. He hadn’t stopped pacing the front of the store since we’d come down this morning, and to be honest, it was pissing me off. Seeing other people full of energy when you were drained to the bone was a real rage-maker.

While Poetry refilled all of our cups, she shot me an understanding look, or maybe it was sympathy, there was no telling with her. “Why don’t the three of you try to get a nap in before going back out. You’re no good to Owen exhausted.”

“No,” I almost yelled before putting the cup down on the table with a loud bang. “There’s no time for naps, or sleeping, or even fucking eating. I won’t stop. Not until we find him.”

“I know you are on a ticking clock, Scarlet, but you must take care of yourself, dear.”

I shook my head. “I have to find clues. Something will lead us to Owen.”

Wulf stopped his incessant pacing and chuckled, adding salt to my already gaping and cantankerous wound.

“The fuck are you laughing at...wolf?” Travis whirled on Wulf, moving to stand up and targeting his fearsome gaze at him. Wulf put his hands on his hips and growled before stomping over to Travis. Travis never relented his stance. He puffed out his chest and growled right back, but it sounded more like a snarl.

“Oh, the cat’s grown a pair of fucking balls. Wanna go, cop?” Wulf barked out and they butted chests like two male goats vying for the same female. I guess technically they were.

Neanderthals.

Evan got up after rolling his eyes at me and got between them.
